Description

Mark your calendars for Pentecost this year. That’s the day we will, as a community, “christen” The Gathering Place with a ceremony and catered brunch between the services. We renamed the building that has served as our event space -- from Goethe Hall to The Gathering Place – during our time of pandemic isolation. But to honor its new name, it is high time we gather in it! Starting Sunday, May 8th we will begin preparing to make the most of this exciting Pentecost event. For four Sundays, the Repentance, Reconciliation and Repair Committee will air a new video that gives context and explanation for the renaming decision. The first video, airing just before both worship services on 5/8/22, is titled “Commissioning The Gathering Place ” It will offer some context for how the hall was originally named. The second video titled “That Goethe: More on C.M.” will feature U.C. Berkeley professors, Tony Platt, author of Bloodlines: Recovering Hitler's Nuremberg Laws from Patton's Trophy to Public Memorial and Sue Schweik, who recently acquired a lost collection of several volumes from C.M. Goethe’s personal library. Dr. Platt will also join us during the Christian Education hour on Sunday 5/22 to discuss enduring legacies of C. M. Goethe and the promulgation of eugenics today. The third video, “What’s in a Name?” will feature voices from our congregational family about our renaming decision. And the final video, “God who Gathers Us,” airing the Sunday before Pentecost, will present and celebrate our vision for The Gathering Place’s future. When we gather in The Gathering Place on June 5th, we will come as called by the Holy Spirit, and be sent forth do justice and live God’s Love in the World.
