CAPE CORAL, FL — A Cape Coral art teacher said she was fired after discussing sexual identity with her middle school students. Casey Scott told NBC 2 news that her art students were curious about her identity and asked her about it during an assignment in which they drew flags expressing who they are, which included their own sexual orientations. During this lesson, the first-year teacher at Trafalgar Middle School disclosed to her students that she's pansexual. Scott's firing comes about a month after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill into law. The bill, formally known as the Parental Rights in Education bill, limits how gender identity and sexual orientation are discussed in the state's public school classrooms. Many students shared their own identities with her during their conversation, Scott told Newsweek. "A lot of the kids came up to me and said I'm non-binary, and a couple kids said I'm bi, and one kid said they were gay." The teacher claims that Lee County School District leaders made her trash her students' drawings, which upset them. The school district told NBC 2 that she was fired for not following the required curriculum.
