NORWICH, CT — A fundraiser has been started for a landmark mural for Jubilee Park in Norwich. The mural is intended to serve as a vital start to a wider transformation downtown. The fundraiser was started by Castle Church Inc. The GoFundMe page reads: "James Lindsey Smith & Sarah Harris Fayerweather, black history icons who defied great odds to become leaders in our community, will be honored in the mural. And we are honoring Smith by tracing the steps he took by land and water to escape slavery through Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Philadelphia in 1838. "The journey will be featured in a documentary accessed by a permanent QR code marker at the proposed park site, where a blighted courtyard will become beautiful community-building space for free art, music and other healthy outdoor activities. From broken to beautiful — Jubilee Park is a powerful, symbolic message of restoration and resilience. "Several non-profit, civic, and government organizations are uniting together to create a special place that will welcome visitors to the city center for generations to come, create stronger social ties and develop neighborhood stability."
