BROOKFIELD, WI — Brookfield police arrested two men Thursday who hid from officers in a dumpster after fleeing police and crashing a stolen car near Moorland Road and Interstate 94, police said. The two men are being referred for multiple charges, including driving a car without the owner's consent, recklessly endangering safety, possessing a firearm as a felon and fleeing from officers, police said. Officers responded to a call for two men shining flashlights into cars in a parking lot near 1100 Links Court around 4:02 a.m. When police arrived, the two men got into a Kia Sportage, which officers identified as stolen, and drove away, assistant chief Bryan Franckowiak said in a statement. According to police, the duo led a chase from the parking lot to the northbound freeway entrance of Moorland Road and entered I-94 going west. They crashed the car and ran away, but were eventually found hiding in a dumpster in a hotel parking lot near the crash scene, police said. The crashed SUV was stolen from a Metro Market parking lot on Monday, Franckowiak said. Inside, officers found a stolen handgun and another handgun that had possibly been used in two other car break-ins outside the city, police added. The Town of Brookfield Police Department, the Waukesha Police Department and the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department helped the City of Brookfield Police Department with setting up a perimeter at the crash on Thursday. Police are still investigating how many car break-ins happened, in Brookfield and elsewhere.
