Mineola High-Schooler Contracts Coronavirus

MINEOLA, NY — A Mineola High School student tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and cannot return to school until the student is cleared by the Nassau County Department of Health. In a letter to the school community Monday that was obtained by Patch, superintendent Michael Nagler said Mineola Public Schools learned that day that the student was infected with the virus and had to quarantine. State records classified the case as an on-site positive. "The High School has been cleaned and disinfected since the student's last day of attendance," Nagler said in the letter. A contact tracing investigation was conducted by health department and district administrators helped identify students and staff who also needed to be contacted. "If you or your child is considered a close contact, a Department of Health representative will contact you with instructions," Nagler said. The high school case comes after an off-site teacher previously tested positive for COVID-19 at Mineola Middle School, state records showed. That school has not had a positive test since Sept. 17. School districts across Long Island have seen positive coronavirus tests in the opening days and weeks of the new school year, including Port Washington, Seaford, Syosset, Oyster Bay, New Hyde Park, Great Neck, Plainview and Hicksville.
