5 Contract Coronavirus In Mineola Public Schools, Records Show

MINEOLA, NY — Three Mineola schools recently recorded coronavirus cases, according to state records and district officials. Two people tested positive for COVID-19 at Hampton Street and Mineola Middle Schools, state records showed. Mineola High School also recorded a case. Michael Nagler, the superintendent of Mineola Public Schools, told parents in a letter last week that a student at Hampton Street and another at Mineola Middle School tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The district said it learned of the cases Wednesday. The students must quarantine under Health Department guidelines and cannot return to school until health officials provide written clearance. Two cohorts of students at each school was also switched to remote, virtual learning under the district's coronavirus plan. The Health Department was conducting contact tracing with the help of district administrators. "Information gathered by the DOH contact tracers will be used to determine any additional precautionary measures," Nagler said. "If you or your child is considered a close contact, a Department of Health representative will contact you with instructions." State records showed one student tested positive who was on-site at Hampton Street and another tested positive who was off-site. At Mineola Middle School, a student tested positive who was on-site and an off-site teacher also contracted the virus, records showed. An on-site student at Mineola High School also tested positive, records showed. All schools in the district were closed Monday for Yom Kippur. School districts across Long Island have seen coronavirus cases in the opening days and weeks of the new school year, including Port Washington, Seaford, Syosset, Oyster Bay, New Hyde Park, Great Neck, Plainview and Hicksville.
