MINEOLA, NY—Following Iran's launch of a dozen ballistic missiles against two Iraqi military bases where U.S. troops are housed, tensions between Iran and the United States appear to be at an all-time high. The attack comes after U.S. military killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week, one of Iran's top military leaders and one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic. While President Donald Trump said U.S. forces are "prepared for anything" during an address to the nation Wednesday, he also said that Iran seems to be backing off. "Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world," Trump said. Trump added that the United States is ready to "embrace peace." However, not everyone appears to be convinced. This Thursday, anti-war protests, which are being called "No War With Iran: Day of Action," are scheduled to take place all over the country. "The devastation that a war with Iran could bring upon the earth and humanity cannot be overstated—millions of lives hang in the balance. None of us will win, except politicians and corporations," organizers said on the event's website. In Mineola, the anti-war protest will take place at the Nassau County Courthouse on Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. "Please join us and other groups across the country on Thursday during the evening rush hour to say loudly 'No War With Iran,'" the event page for Mineola reads. "Please bring signs and flashlights if you have them." To see where other protests are taking place in neighboring New York cities or around the country, click here.
