Nassau Exec Cancels State Of County Address To Focus On COVID-19

MINEOLA, NY — With the novel coronavirus continuing to spread across Long Island, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said she is postponing her annual State of the County address, which was originally scheduled for this Wednesday. In an open letter to county residents, Curran said that she was looking forward to delivering the address, but that she is postponing it to focus on combating the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. "...Given current developments related to the spread of COVID-19, right now my first priority is working to ensure the health and safety of every resident of Nassau County," Curran wrote. "Moments like these require full engagement from our elected leaders." Curran said she spoke with both the Republican and Democratic leaders of the County Legislature, and they agreed with her decision. And though she's postponing the address to focus on the response to the virus, Curran urged Nassau residents not to panic. "I'm asking all residents to stay informed and not let fear and anxiety overtake the facts," she said. "Continue to take the necessary precautions based on expert guidance, but otherwise you can and should continue living your everyday life. Nassau is ready with battle-tested protocols in place and boots on the ground." There is no word on when the address is rescheduled for.
