BOSTON – Julie Flavell's new book, The Howe Dynasty, provides a ground-breaking reinterpretation of one of 18th century Britain's most famous military families that forces us to imagine the Revolutionary War in ways that would have been previously inconceivable. On Tuesday, June 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Old North Church & Historic Site will host an in-person discussion with the author at Old North Church during which area residents will hear from Flavell and explore the iconic landmark of the American Revolution. Delving into previously neglected letters of the sister of General William Howe and Admiral Richard Lord Howe, The Howe Dynasty explores the American War of Independence through the eyes of the Howe women. A riveting narrative as well as a long-overdue reassessment of the Howe family, Flavell's book is the first biography of a British 'First Family', whose members had as much at stake as the Washingtons and Adamses in the conflict that created the United States. Meet the men and women of the aristocratic Howe dynasty and hear their stories in a talk by the author that includes rare portraits. A Massachusetts native, Flavell's lifelong interest in Anglo-American relations is reflected in her first book, When London Was Capital of America. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Flavell currently lives in Britain and has lectured at Dundee and Edinburgh Universities. Her latest book, The Howe Dynasty, was selected as a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice in August 2021 and is one of five Finalists for the 2022 George Washington Book Prize. "Old North Church is known for the pivotal lantern signals on the night of Paul Revere's ride, and seen as an icon of the American Revolution, but the church community was very divided in 1775," said Nikki Stewart, Executive Director of the Old North Foundation. "We are excited to present the Howe family story as a way to draw conversation to the compelling aspects of the Loyalist cause." The in-person event, which is hosted by the Old North Foundation in partnership with National Parks of Boston, Revolution 250, and British Consulate-General in Boston, will take place inside Old North Church, located at 193 Salem Street in Boston. The event is free. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. For more information and to register, visit: https://www.oldnorth.com/events/.
