MISSION VIEJO, CA — A big Mission Viejo project has garnered attention citywide, and at Tuesday's city council meeting, councilmembers will consider whether or not to deny a zone change request necessary for the approval of the project. The meeting comes after the Mission Viejo Planning and Transportation Commission recommended the council to deny ValueRock Realty's zoning change request for The Gardens, a proposed development project on the corner of La Paz and Marguerite, according to a previous Patch report. Commissioners said the proposed change to Mission Viejo's zoning code "does not fit the overall character of the city," a news release from the city said. The proposed project, if approved by the city, would demolish the existing 46,148 square-feet of building area to make room for The Gardens, a project with five upper stories and 234 apartment units, over 600 parking spaces and 48,000 square-feet of retail, according to a city staff report. Mission Viejo residents can attend the meeting and have their voices heard by visiting the Mission Viejo City Council Chambers Tuesday at 6 p.m., 200 Civic Center. Residents can also stream the meeting live on the city's website and watch the meeting on air via Cox channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse channel 99. The City Council on Tuesday, May 10 will consider the Planning and Transportation Commission's recommendations to deny ValueRock Realty's zone change request for the Gardens property on the northwest side of Marguerite Parkway and La Paz.
