LOS GATOS, CA — At least 65 students at Los Gatos High School and nine staff members tested positive for COVID-19 over the past two weeks since spring break, according to principal Kevin Buchanan. Buchanan — who sent a letter to parents obtained by several media outlets — wrote in the letter that at least 50 students were potentially infectious while on campus and that more than 2,000 exposure notices had been sent out, according to NBC Bay Area. Buchanan told KPIX5 that an outbreak could "have a significant impact" on the school's year-end activities, including Advanced Placement testing and prom. "Despite what might be happening nationally, we are seeing a local increase, especially at our school," Buchanan said. The school encouraged students to wear masks, though the masking requirement is not back. Buchanan also emphasized the need for more frequent tests for both students and staff. Last month, nearly 100 students at San Mateo High School tested positive after it held its prom. While Bay Area schools have generally been cautious with re-opening during the pandemic, mask mandates have gone away as the school year approaches its end and regular school activities have resumed.
