9 Fremont Students Named National Merit Scholarship Winners

FREMONT, CA — - Nine students from the Fremont Unified School District were among the approximately 1,000 high school seniors nationwide named this week as winning finalists of National Merit Scholarship awards. "These scholarships are a testament to the excellence of our students and staff in FUSD, and I send my congratulations to each recipient," FUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack said. Students from American High School: Om R. Awate;Subhon Ghosh;Ayush Gupta. And from Mission San Jose High School: Ameya Chandra;Athul Krishnan;Medhashree Parhy;Melanie Sun;Andrew S. Wang;Jackie Wong. Each recipient met such scholarship criteria as outstanding academic records, written essays, SAT or ACT scores confirming performance, plus examples of their academic records, community service, leadership, employment and honors/awards received, officials said. Scholarship funding, for any regionally accredited U.S. college or university, is provided by corporate sponsors, and most are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, with annual stipends from $1,000 to $10,000 per year, or single payments between $2,500 and $5,000, according to the organization. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will name recipients of $2,500 scholarships and college-sponsored awards in May, June and July. Visit the site here for more information. The Fremont Unified School District operates 42 schools with more than 33,000 students. With 24 National Merit Scholars in 2021 and seven 'California Distinguished Schools' named in 2020-2021, FUSD's mission is to provide equitable opportunities to "Educate, Challenge and Inspire" students of all ages, talents and ability levels, according to officials.
