Press release from the City of Portsmouth: In a presentation to the City Council, Committee member Chris Benecick noted that, "It is important to remember the lives once lived who have stories to tell." He detailed the diverse and significant Portsmouth residents, including New Hampshire's first Governor John Langdon, signer of the Declaration of Independence William Whipple, his enslaved servant Prince Whipple and other free and enslaved Africans, the first Jewish resident and early Catholics who are buried in the colonial North Cemetery and Victorian Union Cemetery. North Cemetery is the largest 1700s cemetery in the Northeast, with 1800 graves, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This press release was produced by the City of Portsmouth.
