NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville police will take part in a safety initiative along the Route 59 corridor on May 9, according to an update from city officials. The initiative will include increased patrols that focus on speeding, distracted driving and other violations. "We call this regional campaign Route 59 on 5/9," Naperville Police Sgt. Rick Krakow said in a news release. Sgt. Krakow added, "When the weather starts to improve and the windows go down, we tend to notice that both the music volume and driving distractions tend to go up. We want to remind motorists to obey the posted speed limit, wear their seat belts and put their phones down. Our goal is to reduce the number of traffic crashes along Route 59, especially those that result in serious injury or death." The Naperville Police Department's efforts are part of a larger initiative that includes increased patrols by police departments in Antioch, Joliet, Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Streamwood, Shorewood, West Chicago and Warrenville, along with Illinois State Police District 15.
