2 Semis Crash Into Joliet Viaduct, It's Still Closed

JOLIET, IL — A 59-year-old Plainfield semi-trailer driver and a 44-year-old semi driver from Crest Hill were cited by Joliet police after crashing into the Scott Street viaduct in Joliet's downtown Thursday morning. Joliet police say the crash involving Sam Tagoe of Plainfield happened at 5:25 a.m. He was driving his semi-trailer northbound on Scott Street in the right lane when the top of the semi-trailer struck the railroad viaduct, causing the trailer to tip on its side. The viaduct was damaged by the Plainfield man's collision, Joliet police indicated. While Joliet police were still on the scene, Israel Gonzalez of Crest Hill was driving his semi tractor trailer north on Scott Street in the left lane. At 6:30 a.m., his semi's trailer struck the same railroad viaduct. Gonzalez's trailer then struck a light pole after becoming separated from the tractor, according to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English. The BNSF railroad was notified to inspect the viaduct. Neither driver was injured. Both drivers were cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Joliet police announced.
