SNELLVILLE, GA — A father who was charged with second-degree murder after his baby died in a hot car is scheduled to go before a judge Friday, reported WSB-TV.
Snellville police are investigating the death of an 8-month-old who was brought to a Snellville emergency room dead on Tuesday after spending hours in a hot car. The Gwinnett County father, Davied Japez McWorry Whatley, has been charged with second-degree murder, according to police. The grandmother brought the baby to a local hospital around 9 p.m., nearly seven hours after he was arrested.
Whatley was coming to pick up a gun police had in their possession, when they discovered Whatley had a warrant out for his arrest for a probation violation.
The family told WSB-TV that Snellville police officers assured him his 8-month-old baby was OK.
Whatley's family said he told police his daughter was in his car.
"He kept asking over and over again, 'Can I make a phone call? Someone needs to go get my daughter,'" Whatley's mother Leticia Padilla told WSB on Wednesday.
Police say Whatley never told them about his daughter, reported the news station.
WSB obtained body camera footage where they said you can hear an officer saying something about a person in the parking lot.
