PHOENIX, AZ — A woman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Phoenix Wednesday while waiting in line for food with her adolescent son, according to Phoenix police. Martha A. Alejo, 32, was fatally shot in the chest around 8 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of 7th Avenue and Pima Road, police said. Alejo and her son were standing in line when a car stopped in front of the business and started shooting at the people in line, police said. Several other bystanders were nearby, but Alejo was the only one who was injured. The car then took off, heading south on 7th Avenue, police said. Police do not believe that Alejo was the intended target. "We know that violent crime in our city has been on the rise," Commander Warren Brewer, head of Phoenix Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau said in a news release. "No one should have to worry about being shot as they stand in line for food. And no child should have to see their mother gunned down for no reason," The Phoenix Police Department said in the news release that it is committed to using every resource at its disposal to find whoever is responsible so they can be held accountable. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Phoenix Police Department, or Silent Witness, if they want to remain anonymous, at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish speakers.
