DOUGLASVILLE, GA — A Douglas County High School football standout who played for Auburn University and later for a top Canadian Football League team has died, according to multiple reports. Defensive end Quency Williams died from a heart attack at age 61, Ed Tait, senior reporter for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, tweeted on Thursday. The Douglas County Sentinel reports that Williams died on April 23. Williams was a native of Douglasville, and he lived in Winston. Williams graduated from Douglas County in 1980 and then played for Auburn. After being unable to land a permanent spot in the USFL and NFL, Williams migrated to the CFL, where he played for both the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was a linebacker with the Winnipeg team that won the 1990 Grey Cup, the CFL's equivalent of the NFL's Super Bowl. After his playing days ended, Williams made headlines again when he helped save a drowning man after a vehicle accident in Winnipeg. A service for Williams will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Old Mountain Top Baptist Church in Winston, according to Willie Watkins Funeral Home as reported by the Douglasville newspaper.
