TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of coronavirus cases in Florida rose to 27,869 Tuesday night as one Florida county lifted its curfew. The Manatee County Commissioners voted Tuesday to lift a curfew that was put in place to protect people during the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told his residents that it was unlikely the city's world famous beaches would reopen before early June. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday that efforts to manage the spread of the virus in Florida have paid off. "Our work is succeeding. We have flattened the curve," he said. "In fact, not only did the hospital system not get overwhelmed, since the pandemic started available hospital beds have increased in the state of Florida not decreased." The state total represents an increase of 811 people who were confirmed to have contracted the virus in the previous 24-hour period. The number of deaths in Florida from the virus also rose to 867 Tuesday night, up from 823 during the previous 24-hour period. That represents an additional 44 people who died from the virus in Florida. Broward County reported four new deaths Tuesday as did neighboring Miami-Dade County. Palm Beach County reported nine new deaths. The three South Florida counties account for some 60 percent of all of the state's cases. Alachua County reported its very first death from the virus. Volusia County reported three new deaths. Escambia County reported two new deaths as did Pinellas County and Sarasota County. Lee County, Duval County, Hillsborough County, Polk County, St. Lucie County, Suwannee County and Collier County each reported one new death. There were a total of 4,226 hospitalizations from the virus in Florida as of Tuesday night. The state had a 9.8 percent positive test rate out of total 284,206 tests. Miami-Dade for the first time surpassed 10,000 cases of the virus Tuesday night, the most of any of Florida's 67 counties with 10,056 confirmed cases. Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 4,168 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 2,320 cases.
