Weymouth Cancels Graduation Ceremony Plans Due To Coronavirus

WEYMOUTH, MA — An unauthorized football camp in South Weymouth that the state said it contact traced as a source of positive cases of coronavirus has led school officials to cancel Friday's planned Weymouth High graduation ceremony. Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple and Weymouth High principal Alan Strauss said the ceremony, which had been postponed from June due to the coronavirus crisis, was canceled due to virus concerns on Tuesday. Officials said that, while the camp had no affiliation with Weymouth Public Schools, it did draw participants from Weymouth and several South Shore communities. Officials said the potential of graduation attendees, or those who have come into contact with them, being positive for the virus, along with a recent increase of cases in the town, made them cancel the ceremony "out of an abundance of caution." "We are disappointed that we cannot celebrate our class of 2020 as planned and we know that this will be disheartening news for our senior students and their families," Curtis-Whipple said. "However, given the significant safety concerns posed by unauthorized large group events, we feel that canceling our in-person graduation is the safest course of action to protect the health of our students and the surrounding community."
