This is a rather convenient logical fallacy--basically creating a red herring to mislead people. The atrocities committed under the various communist dictatorships were NOT committed in the name of or for the purposes of furthering atheism. However, the atrocities committed under the various theist dictatorships or proto-dictatorships were generally committed in the name of furthering that religion. Motivation matters and you have ignored that to manufacture your strawman. It continues today with US based religious organizations pushing for (and succeeding in getting) some African nations to jail and even execute homosexuals for Christian religious reasons for example--so you can't pretend that is "long past history".
