Study Duration: Approximately 45 - 60 minutes. Compensation: $40 to cover time and travel paid via Zelle, Venmo, or cash after completion of the experiment. You must have a Zelle or Venmo account to participate so that we can compensate you. Description: In this experiment, you will play the role of a disaster management specialist reviewing digital imagery of potentially damaged buildings. In some cases, you will have a top-down perspective and in other cases your viewpoint will be closer to the ground. You will be asked to identify details about the buildings you see including height and any roof damage, and make an overall assessment. The goal of the experiment is to explore the relationship between the fidelity of models used in virtual reality training and training outcomes. The simulation will be in varying degrees of abstraction to explore the relationship between fidelity and style, and task performance. You will use a virtual reality Head Mounted Display (VR headset). Location/Time: Sessions will be scheduled by appointment at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies Playa Vista office. All COVID safety protocols will be adhered to, including social distancing, and full wipe-downs of all equipment between participants. Who is eligible: Must be 18 years old or older, a fluent speaker of English, and be without any impairment that would interfere with the viewing of moving images through a virtual reality headset.
