Joins us in person at Books & Books as Kelsey Milian Lopez joins us to discuss her debut poetry collection THE SOCIOLOGY OF A MIAMI GIRL Books & Books is excited to present an evening with Kelsey Milian Lopez as she discusses her book The Sociology of a Miami Girl ($15). ***Please note: This event will take place at the Books & Books in Coral Gables at 265 Aragon Ave. Tickets are FREE and books will be available for purchase at the event. About the Book:The Sociology of a Miami Girl is the debut poetry collection by musician and academic Kelsey Milian, who intersects her multi-ethnic identities together to navigate the social-cultural world. As the daughter of Latinx immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Japan, and Europe, Kelsey uses personal and poetic narratives to retell lessons and connect to her indigenous Zapotec and K'iche Maya identity. She blends the personal and political by blending poems on healing, micro-aggressions, self-love, romance, and family to redefine what it means to be a woman of color. Kelsey's work is a thank-you letter to her relatives and ancestors who represent a community of sacrifice and resilience. About the Author:Kelsey Milian Lopez was raised in Miami, Florida. With a strong sense of cultural identity she has been able to connect and trace her heritage with her Mexican, Guatemalan, Aztec, Zapotec, K’iche Maya, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese roots. She recently graduated with a degree in Sociology and Educational Studies at the Liberal Arts Institution Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. She now resides in New York City as she pursues a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at CUNY Graduate Center.
