'Star Wars' Devotees Unite On 'May The Fourth'

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — It's "Star Wars" aficionados' favorite day on the calendar-- May 4th-- or should I say-- May the Fourth be with you! Molloy College communications professor Brian Cogan has been a fan of the sci-fi franchise since the original hit the screens 45 years ago. "I think it's both fun and fascinating that it's been going on for so long, at least for over 10 years," Cogan said. The famous "Star Wars" tagline became an annual part of the social media vernacular. "A lot of people do get it. It's not just a joke, it's also a way of saying we're still fans, we're all in this together," he said. Cogan was teaching online on this May 4, so the interaction was lacking. Under normal circumstances, though, he'd be walking the hallways greeting people with May the Fourth be with you. He has shown the 1977 movie, or clips from it, in his classes. Even though his students were born long after the "Star Wars" phenomenon started, many got interested through the later productions, including "The Mandalorian" and "Clone Wars." "Very few popular culture fandoms last this long," Cogan said.
