Description
MERRICK, NY — A week before in-person classes were set to resume, a staff member at a Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District school tested positive for the coronavirus.
The district reported that the staff member worked at Merrick Avenue Middle School, in Merrick. Because they tested positive for the virus, contact tracers from the county investigated. They found only one other person who had been in close contact with the infected individual.
The person who was in close contact has to quarantine for 14 days. The person who tested positive will not be allowed to return to the school for at least 10 days, and until they have a negative test for the coronavirus.
The district said the positive case would not affect the opening of schools.
"As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our foremost priority," the district said in a statement. "Today, opening faculty and staff meetings were conducted as scheduled and we look forward to the opening of school on Sept. 8."
