From The School District of Lee County: September 24, 2020 The School District of Lee County is proud to congratulate Gulf Middle School Assistant Principal Emma Winfield for being named Outstanding American Heart Challenge Coordinator. Winfield was nominated by the Southeastern Region of the American Heart Association to be in the National Awards Ceremony for the American Heart Association. "Innovation is a word that would describe Emma," says Emily Cooper, Youth Market Director for the American Heart and Stroke Association of Southwest Florida. "Not only did she launch a 5K Color Run that included over 250 students and followed that up with a new school running club, she led the charge as the first school in the Southwest Florida area to launch the Quit Lying campaign focused on educating students on the dangers of teen vaping. She is a champion for her students, putting her time and talents to create programming to meet her middle school students where they are with relevant and engaging content to drive health outcomes." 34,000 schools participated in the 2019-2020 American Heart Challenge Youth Programs. The Outstanding American Heart Challenge Coordinator award is given to one volunteer nationwide each year on the middle and high school level that shows creativity of event, passion of event, community involvement, and has truly gone above and beyond for health. More than 500 students at Gulf Middle School took the pledge to not vape on January 31st by joining the American Heart Association's #QuitLying campaign.
