Press release from Port Jefferson School District: May 3, 2022 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Abby Rolfe has been selected as a recipient of the News 12 Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is provided by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Abby was a four-year starter for varsity girls soccer. During that time she received All-League honors in 2019 and All-County in 2020 and 2021. As a captain, Abby helped lead the girls to Suffolk County Championship this past fall. Abby has been a starter for varsity girls basketball since eighth grade. She received All-League honors in 2019 and All-County in 2020 and 2021. As a member of the basketball team, she helped lead the team to four county championships. Abby was a starter for the varsity softball team in grades 7-9. In grades 10-12, she has been a member of the varsity baseball team and has been a starter for the last two seasons. Abby received All-League honors for softball in 2019 and All-League Academic honors for baseball in 2020. In addition to her outstanding performance in athletics, Abby also spends time giving back to others. Abby has done 500 hours of community service and is a member of the Varsity Club and Honor Society at the high school. She is a leader of Vacation Bible School, a Sunday school teacher and counselor aid at Hidden Pond day camp. She is a constant participant in League of Yes and the Polar Plunge to help raise awareness for individuals with special needs. With all of the time committed to athletics and giving back to others, Abby's school work does not take a back seat. She is enrolled in honors and AP classes and maintains a GPA over 98. News 12 recently came to the school to interview Abby and present her with the scholarship. News 12 will air the episode with Abby and the other Scholar-Athlete recipients on Tuesday, May 3, at 5 p.m. The episode will also be posted on the News 12 Facebook page after that initial airing.
