NORTHPORT, NY — Costello, a 5-year-old male, is the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Pet of the Week. Costello is the longest resident of the Northport Cat Rescue Association, said Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue. "The first thing I want to tell you about Costello Is that he is FIV positive," Wild said. "I want to get that out of the way because people fall in love with Costello immediately when they meet him and then they find out that he is FIV positive and they walk away. I want to tell you all the reasons why you shouldn't walk away from this beautiful boy." Wild said not enough is known about cats that are FIV positive. "Unfortunately it's a stigma that they have and can't get adopted because they are labeled," Wild said. "But Costello is not unadoptable. FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus. FIV is only contagious among cats and is difficult to transmit. Which means if Costello is your only cat, there are no concerns. Or if you have another FIV Positive cat, again it means nothing. Cats with FIV can also live happily with other cats and never spread their virus. In fact, Costello lived outdoors with another cat for years, and he remained FIV negative. He is being fostered with 6 cats sharing food and litter boxes and all are healthy." Costello (Courtesy of Northport Cat Rescue Association)Costello is a mush, according to Wild. He is loving. He really likes other cats but it's humans that he loves most of all. "He will sit by your side every moment of the day if you want him to," Wild said. "All Costello wants is affection. If you are looking for a companion to keep you company, or tell your secrets to or watch your favorite movie with, Costello is your guy. "He is kind-hearted and gentle," she continued. "He is a perfect gentleman. He craves attention and longs for his forever home. Two adoption applications have fallen through for our poor boy, but he remains proud and hopeful. He is not unadoptable, and every day he shows us why." Costello is neutered, has all his shots, is litter box-trained, and micro-chipped.
