HUNTINGTON, NY — The Town of Huntington will host the first official Eid celebration in town history this week. Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and is one of the most important holidays in Islam. The cultural celebration will take place in the Town Board Room at Huntington Town Hall on Friday at 4:30 p.m. "We join Huntington's Pakistani, Indian, Arab, and Turkish-American communities and all who observe this annual cultural celebration reflecting on acts of kindness, gratitude and generosity," Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth said in a news release. There will be a festival with a traditional "nasheed," or vocal performance, face-painting, henna tattoos and refreshments. American Muslims typically celebrate Eid with family, friends, and meals during daylight hours after the month of fasting for Ramadan. Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the United States and according to the U.S. Embassy, New York State has the most number of mosques of any U.S. state, with 343. The Huntington event will be live-streamed on Optimum 18, FIOS 38, and at huntingtonny.gov/featured-programs.
