EAST VILLAGE, NY — At least half-a-dozen people were arrested Tuesday morning near Tompkins Square Park while protesting Mayor Eric Adam's push to clear the five boroughs of homeless encampments, the New York Times reported. It was at least the seventh time in the past six weeks that sanitation workers have swept the East Village encampment, the New York Times added. The encampment is located on a block dubbed "Anarchy Row," which is at East Ninth Street and Avenue B. The individuals arrested Tuesday morning included activists from Washington Square Mutual Aid and Brooklyn Eviction Defense, along with Johnny Grima, a homeless man who has led the fight against the sweeps and who was carried off by three officers, the New York Times reported. On April 6, police eventually cleared an encampment of four tents at the same location after a seven-hour standoff and multiple arrests.
