Shotwell Street near 20th Street, San Francisco CA

Description

This is a large basement space in a small apartment building near 20th and S. Van Ness. You and I will each have our own end of the space for working, so unless you need privacy for some reason, there are really no limits on when and how much you use it. No live-work, though. The balance of the space is for common use and includes storage, additional work area space, a comfortable sofa, etc. It's not beautiful, but it's big, especially for the price. The ceilings are unfortunately quite low, probably about 8 feet, so it's not going to work for someone who typically works on 12 x 20-foot canvases. There's one east-facing window in your part of the space, and I'd say at best, the amount of natural light coming in most of the time could be described as "anemic." It's also not going to work for anyone whose work is especially noisy, uses any toxic substances, generates noxious fumes, etc. While access is 24-hour/day, noise has to be kept to a minimum during late night as people live above the space. The person you'd be replacing did mostly sewing projects. I've used it quite a bit for screen printing (there's a large utilitub-type sink with H and C taps in the room). It's perfect if you do small- to medium-scale artwork, crafting, non-industrial type maker stuff, graphic design, illustration, collage, etc. The floor is bare concrete slab with a hodgepodge of rugs (each uglier than the last) covering most of it. Ample tables, desks, shelving, storage are available for you to use, or bring in your own furnishings and equipment, so long as it fits in your area (inside the dashed lines on the floorplan image). $500 moves you in if you start at the beginning of a month. That covers your first month's rent and a security deposit. Would prefer someone with references from a previous work space or possibly from your residential landlord, if you're a renter.
