PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A former special police officer with the Embassy of Qatar has filed a lawsuit against a Maryland police department, claiming an officer with that department pulled a Taser and gun, then pepper-sprayed him before putting him in handcuffs, according to a report by the Atlanta Black Star. According to the lawsuit obtained by the Black Star, Steven Alexander, who worked as a special officer at the Washington, D.C. embassy, was walking home through a national park in 2018 when he was approached by a police officer demanding to see his credentials. When Alexander refused, the officer pulled out his Taser and pointed his gun at him and ordered him to the ground before pepper-spraying him, the Black Star reported. Following the incident, Alexander's lawyers claim he lost his job, was subjected to criminal charges, and suffered years of emotional distress. The lawsuit was filed against the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Police Department as well as Officer Mel Proctor, claiming violation of his rights and use of excessive force.
