OSHA Emphasizes Fall Safety After Tragic Gillian's Pier Death

OCEAN CITY, NJ — After this week's death of a Gillian's Wonderland Pier worker, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is urging New Jersey employers to "take a stand against falls" and raise fall hazard awareness to stop fall fatalities and injuries. Robert W. Sanger, a 62-year-old welder from Pittsgrove, died from a fall Monday while working at Gillian's. Read More: Worker Dead After Fall At Gillian's Wonderland Pier In light of this tragedy, OSHA is urging employers to observe National Fall Safety Stand-Down Week, May 2 through 6, to raise fall awareness in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries. According to OSHA, fatalities caused by falls from elevation are a leading cause of death for construction workers. "Yesterday's fatal fall is a tragic reminder of the importance of protecting workers from fall hazards," OSHA Area Director in Marlton Paula Dixon-Roderick said in a news release on Tuesday. "Worker falls are preventable with the use of proper fall protection." OSHA is currently investigating Sanger's fall and death.
