HERNDON, VA — More than 200 volunteers from 16 different service organizations and groups were recognized on Sunday for their service to the Town of Herndon as part of the 36th Annual Mayor's Volunteer Appreciation Reception at the Herndon Community Center, according to a release. Each of those recognized had volunteered 100 hours or more in the community last year.
Sheila Olem and Town Council members Naila Alam, Signe Friedrichs, and Jasbinder Singh joined members of the public in celebrating the spirit of volunteerism. The theme of Sunday's event was "Shining a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve." Barbara Glakas, Herndon Historical Society Historian and author of the book, "Hidden History of Herndon," was the event's keynote speaker.
Olem presented two Distinguished Service awards on Sunday. The first was presented to Angie Wantz, who volunteers at The Closet, Sterling Volunteer Fire Department, and Dranesville Church of the Brethern. She also serves as a caregiver to homebound individuals and is the assistant pantry manager at LINK.
Renee Maxwell received the second Distinguished Service Award, for serving as the Herndon Village Network's Media/Publicity Coordinator, food delivery for LINK, liaison for the partnership between Herndon Elementary School and Trinity Presbyterian. She is also a board member of both NJROTC and the drama boosters at Herndon High School; a scout leader; and a volunteer with Kingston Chase Swim Team. In addition, she helped canvass for voter registration preceding the presidential elections. Food For Neighbors nominated Maxwell for helping the organization grow to serve more than 1,500 students a week at 25 schools across Northern Virginia.
