PLAINFIELD, IL — Weeks out from his retirement, Lane Abrell has been named the 2022 Superintendent of Distinction by the Illinois Association of School Administrators. Abrell, an educator of 36 years who lead District 202 as superintendent for nine years, was recognized for the honor at IASA's luncheon in Springfield on Wednesday. Members of the group's Three Rivers Region — comprised of Will, Kendall and Grundy counties — selected Plainfield School District 202's superintendent for the title based on his commitment, dedication and leadership, according to a news release. "I am very humbled and honored to be selected as the IASA Three Rivers Superintendent of Distinction," Abrell said in a statement. "This honor is really credited to the fantastic staff, students, and community I have been fortunate to lead." Members cited a number of Abrell's accomplishments during his tenure as superintendent, including the following. Implementing full-day kindergarten for all eligible students.Implementing foreign language classes at middle schools.Overseeing installation of artificial turf at four high school stadiums.Achieving and maintaining Plainfield schools' financial recognition status from the Illinois State Board of Education.Leading district 1:1 laptop initiative for students.Achieving record-level participation and scores on Advanced Placement exams.Developing a "Grow Your Own" administrator program.Leading a building program for Wallin Oaks, which opened in August 2021, becoming the 18th elementary school in District 202. Brent Clark, IASA's executive director, said superintendents who were honored Wednesday "are great examples of how strong leadership can improve the educational environment for students, strengthen communities and continuously push districts forward." "Superintendents across Illinois navigated immense challenges this school year, so it really is an honor to standout and be recognized by your peers for outstanding leadership and elevating student success," said Brent Clark, IASA's executive director.
