OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police issued a total of 131 citations during its distracted driving enforcement period that lasted throughout the month of April, officials said. Officers issued 97 hands-free law violations as well as 18 other tickets for various infractions. Next door in Plainfield, police didn't give out as many citations. Overall, Plainfield officers issued 55 total tickets, including 36 hands-free violations, Patch reported. In an announcement at the end of March, Oswego police said they would ticket drivers who texted or used their phones while on the road. RELATED: Oswego Police 'Drop It And Drive' Campaign Kicks Off In April "Distracted Driving Awareness Month allowed the Oswego Police Department to bring a heightened awareness to stop motorists from engaging in this deadly behavior," Public Information Officer Cathy Nevara said in a statement. The department joined more than 200 local agencies to host the month-long enforcement campaign along with the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police.
