NORRISTOWN —Plans to build a skatepark in Poley Park here came closer to a reality Tuesday night when borough council awarded a contract to an engineering firm for a preliminary land survey. A $29,300 contract was awarded to Pennoni Engineering, King of Prussia. The survey of the 8,000-square foot park at West Marshall and Markley streets will also include an environmental study. Council previously allocated $1.1 million of federal funds from the American Rescue Act for the skateboard park project. The survey is expected to take several weeks. When the survey is completed, design and construction will proceed. The community interest in the skatepark sparked several years ago. In June 2020, Steve Connerton formed a Facebook group to share information on the status of the skateboard park with the public. Heather Lewis, a council member, said she is anxious to move the project forward. In other business, the council issued several proclamations to honor Norristown High School Athletes for their commitment and talent. The proclamations were awarded to coaches and athletes participating in cheerleading, indoor track, wrestling, soccer and basketball. Senior Jaden Brown set a meet record in the Pioneer Athletic Conference, capturing gold at 21.36 meters in 200 meters.
