Nassau Coronavirus Cases By Community: 9 Areas Now Top 1,000

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Long Island is finally reopened, and things seem to be returning to normal. But the threat from the coronavirus is still real, and dozens of people are testing positive for the virus each day, even as the death rate drops to nearly zero. Since the first confirmed case March 5, 46,939 Nassau County residents have been confirmed to have contracted the coronavirus and 2,202 people have died. Four Nassau residents have died from the virus in September, and 2,168 have tested positive. According to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, there are 44 patients hospitalized by the coroanavirus, with 14 in the ICU. "We expected school reopenings to pose a new challenge, and Nassau remains on high alert with regard to infections at schools and universities," Curran said. "The county Health Department is working closely with the state and hotspot communities to halt any spread of the virus in its tracks, as well as ensure that health and safety guidance is followed. The risk of asymptomatic spread is now higher than it has been in recent months, so it's imperative we continue to wear our masks." Despite a low infection rate, cases continue to climb. There are nine eight Nassau communities that have more than 1,000 confirmed cases. Hempstead, the hardest-hit community, has had more than 2,450 cases.
