CLEVELAND — In his first year of eligibly, legendary Detroit rapper Eminem was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, putting him in an elite class of first-ballot Hall of Famers.
The hip-hop superstar becomes the 20th Detroit performer revered in the institution's 36-year history, and the first since the Miracles were selected in 2012.
The iconic Detroit rapper's induction into the hall of fame comes 25 years after the release of his debut album, "Infinite." He would go on to become the best-selling U.S. artist in the first decade of the 2000s.
Detroit rock and roll group MC5 missed the cut again, after they were nominated for the sixth time to the hall of fame. The radical 60s band formed in Detroit has been one of the more notable rock and roll hall of fame snubs. Many believe the band played in innovative part in guiding the punk rock movement in America.
Eminem headlined the class of new inductees along with Pat Benatar, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon and longtime Motown Records artist Lionel Richie. He becomes just the seventh hip-hop inductee and along with Jay-Z, just the second solo rapper to be inducted while alive.
HBO and HBO Max streaming will air the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on Nov. 5 at L.A.'s Microsoft Theater.
