Press release from the Woburn Public Library: May 3, 2022 Welcome to Meet the Librarian Monday, where each week we will highlight one of our awesome WPL librarians! Since we are almost done with our Meet the Librarian series, we are introducing the newest members of the WPL team. The most recent addition to the Children's Room is Janice, who has quickly jumped into leading programs for our youngest patrons. Who are you and what do you do? My name is Janice, and I am a Library Assistant in the Children's Room. I help families find and check out books, and I straighten shelves, make displays, process new books, and more. There is always so much to do! I lead the Toddler Time program which is a joyous, unpredictable half hour each week, and I started the Rookie Book Club for children who have just started reading (Kindergarten through 2nd grade level). How long have you been working in libraries? I started at the Woburn Public Library five months ago. This is my first official library job, but I have volunteered in a number of public and school libraries in the past. My professional experience has always had a connection to children, literacy, and education. I also work part-time at Northern Essex Community College where I've been a Writing Tutor for more than 10 years. What's your favorite part of your job? I love being surrounded by children's books and helping young patrons discover and select them from our amazing collection. Watching kids get excited about reading makes me so happy. I really enjoy all aspects of my job and the many opportunities to be creative. What are you reading at the moment? I'll be honest, lately I have been reading a lot of board books (for toddlers) and easy reader titles for my book club. For the little ones, I am trying to introduce them to simple stories that might hold their attention for a few moments… For the new readers, I am looking for easy-to-read books that will appeal to a diverse group of children, so they can see themselves represented in the stories and learn about people and places outside their world as well. I recently finished The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. It is a novel based on The Pack Horse Library initiative which sent librarians deep into Appalachia to distribute books during the Great Depression. These women were brave and strong, and they were the precursor to book mobiles! When not at work, what do you like to do? I am really into genealogy. I have family all over the world, and I spend a lot of time keeping in touch with them via WhatsApp and Facebook. I also like to create photo collages, albums, and slide shows for family and friends for special occasions. Can you believe it? There are only a few weeks left of Librarian of the Week. Stay tuned to see what we will follow this series up with. This press release was produced by the Woburn Public Library. The views expressed here are the author's own.
