WELLESLEY, MA — A Wellesley firefighter was hospitalized with the coronavirus. Wellesley Fire Chief Rick DeLorie said on Tuesday that one firefighter was hospitalized and others in the department had been sick with the virus. DeLorie did not specify how many firefighters were affected but said "all but a few with mild symptoms have returned to work." In a letter to the community, DeLorie praised the department for their work on the front lines during the crisis. "I have never been more proud of our firefighters and the town of Wellesley than I am today," DeLorie said. He added that he's moved by the community's efforts to help first responders. "A moving example is the amazing amount of masks and other PPE which residents in Town have donated to our department, to be distributed to front line health care workers who desperately need them," DeLorie said Wellesley has 33 cases of the coronavirus in town, as of Wednesday. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Tuesday announced 96 more deaths from the new coronavirus, bringing the state's death toll to 356.
