LONG ISLAND, NY — Record numbers of people around the country have flocked to the polls to vote in the 2020 election, and New York has been no different. In addition to the presidential election, both the entirety of the New York State Assembly and Senate were up for election this year. Find the results of all local races on our Long Island Election Hub. All 63 seats in the state Senate were up for election this year, including the nine districts on Long Island. The Senate is controlled by Republicans, and the seats on Long Island reflect that. Three of the Island's nine seats were held by Republicans (two of which have retired this year), and the other six were held by Democrats. This election could make Long Island even more blue, as the Island has been going to Democrats more in recent years. Races to Watch Both the races for District 1 and 2 have no incumbent, leaving the seat open for grabs. In District 1, Laura Ahearn and Anthony Polumbo are running to replace Sen. Kenneth LaValle, who retired after 44 years in office. The 80-year-old Republican was one of the longest-serving senators ever. Over in District 2, candidates Michael Siderakis and Mario Mattera are also running to replace a retiring Republican. Sen. John Flanagan retired at the end of June, leaving his seat vacant. He was in the Senate for 34 years, and the 59-year-old served as Majority Leader from 2015-18 after former Sen. Dean Skelos was arrested and removed from his seat. Ongoing Results These are the unofficial results as of Wednesday morning, with all of the early voting and votes cast on Election Day counted.
