LONG ISLAND, NY— On Monday, The New York Post reported that retiring Representative Peter King, the long-serving Republican Congressman from Long Island's 2nd District, is on a short list to serve in President-elect Biden's administration. The Post, citing an anonymous source "close to the transition," said that King is one of 20 House legislators being considered for a key post. All 20 received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Jefferson-Hamilton 2020 award for bipartisanship. The Post article cites the unnamed source's claims that the Biden team wants to assemble a bipartisan cabinet and team to help heal divisions after the contentious presidential election and to help foster bipartisan cooperation. The short list contains three Republicans from New York State. King is the only Long Island politician named. King's Congressional seat was contested by New York State Republican Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino and former Babylon Town Councilwoman and Democrat Jackie Gordon. Garbarino leads the count with absentee ballots still to be tallied. King served 14 terms in the House of Representatives and served as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, among many other posts, and lives in Seaford.
