Wrong-Way Driver On Route 9 Was Drunk: Wellesley PD

WELLESLEY, MA — A wrong-way driver caused a crash on Route 9 on Monday and police said the 20-year-old behind the wheel was under the influence of liquor. The call came in at 3 a.m. on Monday for a driver headed the wrong way down Route 9. Wellesely Police Officer Tim Dennehy came head-on with the wrong-way driver and was able to stop them without crashing the cars or injuring anyone. When the driver was stopped, police realized the person was under the influence of alcohol and arrested them. Before the car was towed, police found drugs inside. As officers arrested the driver, another officer saw a car in the breakdown lane on Route 9 west near Kingsbury Street with substantial damage. The driver told the officer he had to swerve to avoid a wrong way driver moments before, and crashed into the guardrail. The wrong-way driver was charged with possessing a Class B drug with intent to distribute, possessing a Class C drug with intent to distribute, possessing a Class D Drug with intent to distribute, as well as possession of Class B, C, and D drugs, operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a wrong way violation.
