British soldiers stormed Munroe Tavern and transformed it into a field hospital for wounded soldiers making the long trek back from Concord
Following the Battle of Lexington and Concord, British commander Hugh Percy wrote: “The rebels attacked us…with perseverance and resolution. Whoever looks upon them as an irregular mob will find themselves much mistaken.” The British army would need to rethink its strategy and its strength in the aftermath of the battle. Meet the Redcoats of His Majesty’s 10th Regiment of Foot as they take over Lexington center to train for this new war.
Watch the Battalion, the backbone of the army, at the Munroe Tavern, practice their drill where they took over the building on April 19th, 1775, using it as a field hospital, and learn a Loyalist song. At the Depot, the Grenadiers, tall and imposing, will be joined by the regimental surgeon. At Buckman Tavern, the Light Infantry, quick and nimble, will prepare for skirmishes alongside the musicians’ fifes and drums. The soldiers’ wives and support staff, assisting with keeping the army running through nursing, laundry, and boosting morale, will also be present to talk about the behind-the-scenes of British army life.
Each location will have hands-on activities for the whole family to experience living in the 18th century in an army that was always on the move.
