Join PDMNola and social justice advocates in prayer for justice
for the 1500 citizens who remain In prison due to non-unanimous juries.
The Louisiana Supreme Court will reconsider the 25 year-old murder conviction of Reginald Reddick. Reddick is serving a life sentence even though not all jurors agreed to convict him.
The outcome of this case could determine whether roughly 1,500 people still in prison based on non-unanimous jury convictions are entitled to new trials.
Louisiana was one of two states in the U.S. that allowed defendants to be found guilty in felony trials even if one or two members of the jury voted not to convict.
The procedure was a Jim Crow-era convention that sought to silence the voices of Black jurors.
The practice was banned in 2019 when voters made unanimous jury verdicts required going forward. In 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled the practice unconstitutional.
We will meet outside the Louisiana Supreme Court to pray on Monday, May 9th at 6pm. All are welcome.
