Description
Fairfield Police to Host Etch & Catch Event with Factory Specific-Mufflers & More In the last few years, catalytic converter thefts have been on the rise. The Fairfield Police Department is looking for ways to help protect our community from becoming a victim of this type of crime. On Friday, May 13th, The Fairfield Police Department in partnership with Factory Specific of Fairfield will host its first Catalytic Converter Etch & Catch event. Community members will have the opportunity to bring their vehicles down to Factory Specific's Muffler's and More at 408 Union Ave for a free etching. There is no cost to participate. Spaces are limited and reservations are required. See below. Benefits of marking your catalytic converter include: Clearly marking or etching your VIN or License plate onto your converter can deter a theft from happening in the first place. This makes the part identifiable to law enforcement. The idea is that a thief who sees the etching moves on to an easier target.Use a high temperature automotive exhaust spray paint in a bright color as a visible deterrent.Install an Anti-Theft Device. Installing a metal shield or a cage or plate will protect the catalytic converter itself. Why are Catalytic Converter thefts on the rise? The precious metals found in a Catalytic Converter are more valuable than gold. (As of May 2021, rhodium was valued at $27,900 per ounce, palladium at $2,896 per ounce and platinum at $1,227 per ounce.)Easy to steal. Thieves can steal a CAT in less than minute! Unbolting it or using a Sawzall to cut the metal takes less time than you think. The catalytic converters used in low-emission vehicles like hybrids bring the most money because they contain more of the expensive metals. Hybrid models that don’t have a matching all-gas equivalent may be most vulnerable because they’re easier to identify.Large or lifted vehicles are especially vulnerable to catalytic converter thefts. Its easier for thieves to crawl underneath and access the converter. Understanding when your car might be a target for catalytic converter theft is the first key to preventing it. By following these protective measures, you may help deter thieves from targeting your car. Other ways to mitigate the cost of a stolen catalytic converter is to insure your vehicle against these types of thefts. The average cost to replace a Catalytic Converter can range from $1200-$3000. Check with your insurer to see how your policy can minimize the impact of a stolen catalytic converter. This event is by appointments only. Appointment Times listed below.
