HILLSBORO, OR — If you're looking for something to do the morning and early afternoon of May 21, consider heading downtown to the Tom Hughes Civic Center Plaza in downtown Hillsboro. The city will hold its 11th annual Public Works Day. The theme of this year's Public Works Day is "Ready and Resilient," according to the American Public Works Association, which created Public Works Day to let communities feel connected to the people who maintain the place they live, the city said in a statement. The day celebrates public workers, from the electricians who maintain the traffic lights to those who make sure that the sewers don't overflow to the people who fill the potholes and pave the roads, the city said. The family-friendly event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to the city. The even will let the public view city equipment, including a large John Deere mower used by the parks department, vehicles that maintain fire hydrants and front-end loaders, according to the city. Hillsboro's public works department has more information about the day on its website.
