St. Charles Memorial Day Event To Honor Thousands Of Kane Co. Veterans

ST. CHARLES, IL — The city of St. Charles will host its St. Charles Memorial Day parade and memorial service on Monday, May 30. "There are nearly 25,000 veterans in Kane County," said St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek. "We have had a tremendous outpouring of community support for our servicemen and women at our Memorial Day events in the past and look forward to seeing everyone once again as we recognize all those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our nation." Activities will kick off at 6 a.m. with flag raising and cemetery ceremonies. The ceremony will be held at Baker Community Center, 101 2nd St. The Boy Scouts will be posting colors and an honor guard will give an honorary gun salute, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles. Boy Scout troops will then lead flag ceremonies, which will begin at South Cemetery, near 7th avenue near Madison, and continue to North Cemetery, which is located on the west side of Route 25 and 5th Avenue north of Johnor Avenue. The ceremony will conclude at Union Cemetery, which is on the east side of Route 25 and 5th Avenue north of Stonehedge Road, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles. A parade will step off at 10 a.m. at 6th and Main streets and will continue to Riverside Avenue. A memorial service will be held at 10:45 a.m. at the Freedom Shrine along the river west of the former St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Avenue. A special memorial service will immediately follow the parade at the Freedom Shrine along the river, west of the former St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Ave. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the St. Charles Fire Station 1, at 112 N. Riverside Ave. The Memorial Service is led by event coordinator Lt. Colonel Mark Powell. Vitek will read the annual proclamation, there will be a keynote address from Jack Erwin, and "Taps" played by Jim Stombres.
