OSWEGO, IL — The Oswego Police Department is partnering with First National Bank to offer residents a free drive-thru-style shredding service Saturday.
Starting at 9 a.m., people can drive up to the Oswego Public Works Facility, 100 Theodore Drive, and drop off up to three large boxes filled with papers in need of shredding. Drivers should enter the west side of the driveway and stay in their car. Once boxes are emptied and returned to the drivers, they will be directed off the lot, according to a news release.
Police said they will accept boxes of paper until the shred trucks are full or until 1 p.m., whichever comes first. Officials said last year, they stopped accepting boxes at noon.
"The public is encouraged to come early if they do not want to miss the opportunity to clear out unwanted or personal documents," police wrote.
Papers that can be shredded include an array of personal documents such as charge receipts, copies of credit card applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements or credit offers that come in the mail.
"While you cannot fully prevent identity theft you can certainly minimize the possibility of becoming a victim," police said. "By managing your personal information wisely, cautiously and with an awareness of the issue, you can help guard against Identity Theft."
